My personal experience with Shatavari, Vitex, Maca, and other herbs that made a real difference.

I spent months researching herbs for hormone balance when my own body started changing in my 40s and now at 48, I am post menopause. What I learned changed how I think about women's health, and I want to share these insights with you.

These aren't just trendy supplements – they're plants that women have turned to for generations. What fascinates me is how they work with our bodies instead of forcing change. After seeing how they've helped both my clients and myself, I'm excited to share what I've discovered.

The Reality of Hormone Changes

I remember when everything felt... off. You might know the feeling:

  • Tossing and turning at night

  • Those mood swings that seem to come from nowhere

  • That bone-deep tiredness that coffee can't fix

  • Weight creeping up despite doing everything "right"

  • Zero interest in intimacy

  • Brain fog that makes you wonder if you're losing it

Rather than fighting these changes, I've found that certain herbs can help ease the transition. They're subtle but effective, supporting your body's natural rhythms instead of disrupting them.

Let me share the herbs that have consistently worked for my clients (and myself):

Shatavari: Your Gentle Supporter

This one surprised me. In Ayurvedic medicine, they call it "she who possesses a hundred husbands" (quite a name, right?). It's been a game-changer for many women I work with.

What it does:

  • Helps with estrogen balance

  • Reduces hot flashes and dryness

  • Calms frazzled nerves

  • Supports healthy libido

  • Helps your body handle stress better

I like adding the powder to my morning smoothie or warm oat milk. Some women prefer tinctures or capsules – both work well.

Quick note: Skip this one if you're pregnant, nursing, or allergic to asparagus (they're related plants).

Vitex: The Slow-but-Steady Helper

When clients come to me with irregular cycles or mood swings, Vitex is often my first suggestion. It's one of the most researched herbs for women over 35, and I've seen it work wonders – though it does require patience.

What makes it special:

  • Supports natural progesterone production

  • Helps smooth out irregular cycles

  • Can reduce PMS symptoms (including that terrible breast tenderness)

  • May improve fertility when progesterone is low

Here's what's interesting: Vitex doesn't contain any hormones. Instead, it works with your pituitary gland – basically your body's hormone command center. I typically see the best results in women dealing with low progesterone, which becomes more common after 35.

From my experience, you'll want to give it at least 3-6 months before judging results. Start with a capsule or tincture each morning.

Maca: Energy When You Need It Most

I discovered Maca during my own battle with afternoon fatigue. This Peruvian root has been a lifesaver for many of my clients who feel constantly drained.

What I've noticed it helps with:

  • Natural energy (without the coffee jitters)

  • Mood stability when hormones are all over the place

  • Libido support (yes, really)

  • Overall hormone balance

  • Managing hot flashes

The key with Maca is finding your sweet spot. I add the powder to my morning smoothies, but some of my clients prefer capsules – especially the gelatinized form, which can be gentler on sensitive stomachs.

Ashwagandha: Your Stress Shield

If there's one herb I wish I'd known about in my 30s, it's this one. When stress is throwing your hormones into chaos (and let's be honest, when isn't it?), Ashwagandha can help steady the ship.

What it's good for:

  • Taming that stress hormone, cortisol

  • Finally getting decent sleep again

  • Supporting thyroid function

  • Reducing those stress-related mood swings

  • Fighting fatigue

Think of it as your buffer against life's daily stresses. When your cortisol is always high, it affects everything – especially progesterone levels. Getting stress under control often helps other hormone issues fall into place naturally.

Making These Herbs Work for You
After years of working with clients, here's what I've learned about starting an herbal routine:

  1. Start with just one herb. It's tempting to try everything at once, but resist that urge. Give your body time to respond.

  1. Be patient. Keep a simple note on your phone tracking any changes in sleep, mood, energy, and cycles.

  1. Check with your healthcare provider, especially if you're taking medications. These herbs are gentle but powerful.

Daily Habits That Make a Difference
The herbs work better when you support them with simple daily practices. Nothing complicated – just basics like:

  • Taking five deep breaths when you feel stressed

  • Getting outside for a morning walk

  • Eating enough protein (I aim for some at every meal)

  • Creating a wind-down routine for better sleep

  • Starting your day with water before caffeine
